Interview with photographer Alex Fakso

Interview of Verena Grotto
Alex Fakso began his career in the early 90s as a skate photographer.
He subsequently embarked upon a more targeted personal quest which led him to record the entire process of graffiti writers in action, in both train and subway depots. His works has published in important national and international sector magazines such as Freezer, Freestyler, Garage, Rolling Stone … , Alex Fakso has also exhibited at important joint events including: Night Activity at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002; I’ll Comunication II Urbis, Manchester, 2004; Break it Down, Derby, in 2005; Urbana, “La cittá in trasformazione”, Biella, 2005. November 2006 GoGallery presnt the lunch party Heavy Metal book by Alex faKso, His monograph published by Damiani out in february 2007 world wide. February 2007 at Montana Gallery, Barcelona, personal exhibition.

What do you do?
Graffitti Photographer, vandalism and ‘getting fights’ at parties
When did you start and how?
Taking pictures at age of 17, then along the time I perfected my style and my knowledges concreting it in a job. Beeing every time bbbetter or better?)

How do you describe the style of your pictures?
Action photography…. Urban style not very glossy, but very raw.
Last trip done?
Bucharest, taking pictures in action in a subway…
Next one?
Tokyo, in one month, for a month and some days more
Which one is your favourite shot?
Mamma mia, this is a very hard question, there’s not a favourite picture, because everytime I shot there’s always a picture I like most. I have so many pictures taking along the years, and there are a lot of them that I like.
Your worst vice?
Hehehe… japan porno movie…
Why did you choose London?
Hmm for love and to try to get something in a place where it’s very difficult to get, and with a lot of competition …working here in London is very difficut and it’s a real challenge, I really like Europe but I’m always with an eye on USA, … we’ll see…
Do you have any inspiring photographer your really admire?
Bruce Davinson,and many more, but he’s the one for what concerns to subway photography… he did a very good and ezcellent job around the 80’s. Then I admire Lugin Richard concerning to reportage.
Future plans?
Hmmm being a more serious and responsible person… great plans. hahaha
Canon or Nikon?
for me it’s Canon, yesterday, today, tomorrow…

Black & white

London food or Italian?
Well it’s not difficult to choose Italian or rest of the world… Italians do it better.
First exposition?
A long time ago, in 1997 in Vicenza, exposition about graffiti on trains.
Why and how did you come closer to photography?
To fix moments forever.
How did you discover you interest in photography?
Mmm, it was pure chance, taking pictures of my skater and writer friends.
