Interview with RINI GIANNAKI 55DSL creative manager

As i promised I’m posting one of the KIKIMAGAZINE interview for you english readers. Rini is part of the 55dsl team and one of the coolest girl I know and we’re very glade for this so beautiful and very inspiring interview.
Where are you from?
Abit of a mutt; Both my parents are Greek but have always travelled extensively with their lovely bunch of kids on tug. I attended an American College in Greece until moving to London at the age of 17.
How old are you?
27
How would you describe your own style?
A mash-up of ridiculously expensive and disgustingly cheap garments. I love my shoes too much and my favorite tees all previously belonged to my boyfriend.
Your favourite piece of clothing? I have to pick just the one?!? Lets just say that if I had to chose I would go for my oversize vintage tee worn as dress with a horse and bison tie dye graphic bought from Andrea (Rosso)’s vintage store. Sends those horse Margela graphics back to school!

What was the last thing you bought?
Lately my credit card has confessed a love affair with several online Swedish shoe manufacturers; the last of which brought a pair of each Dinsko booties and Vagabond leather boot wedges that will be keeping me happy all winter long.
What outfit did you have the most fun wearing?
During the launch of the Diesel Home range the event dress code was strictly white; I wore a white MARIOS bubble dress over an American Apparel white tight one piece with sky high Iceberg strappy gladiator heels and an oversize denim parka from Burfitt as a twist to match the denim bedspreads of the collection. On a completely different vibe, me and the boyf dressed up as Sid and Nancy for Diesel’s dead celebrities haloween party; never a better ocassion to mix thigh high Victoria’s Secret latex boots and leopard skirt from Camden market.

So how did you get in to fashion - you were initially an illustrator, right?
I literaly stumbled upon it in a dingy bar! Well not realy, not as such, but I got given my first job to do an art installation in one my favorite London fashion stores while drinking in a pub in Brixton. After a short lived love affair with in-store graphics and installations I started working as a freelance fashion illustrator. In 2003 I started freelancing for Diesel on a more regular basis and by the summer of 2004 I was spending a week each month in Italy (where Diesel is based) while trying to graduate from an MA degree at Central Saint Martins. Another two years into the future, having worked as an in house illustrator for Diesel, it was time to do a little shuffle in the same fashion universe so I began working on catwalks, styling photoshoots and store design for Diesel’s sister company 55DSL.
How would you describe your work?
In Flux. Having an obvious distinguishable aesthetic style feels abit tedious and on the restraining side. I’d much rather be known as having the ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) of the creative world; no graphics can be too similar, otherwise I just lose interest.
What is inspiring you at the moment?
My boyfriend and our home ‘Chelsea’ ; we are currently enjoying our own secret music art collective Les Enfants Terribleswhich keeps us busy those cold winter Bassano Del Grappa nights.

What is your dream job?
Im constantly threatening to ditch it all and move to Tibet; or at least Dharamsala. Catch me on a better day and I ‘ll gladly confess that I have been secretely dreaming of leading a cutting edge creative reserach team within 55DSL!
Who are your favorite fashion designer and why?
OH GOD they are too many; Bernard Willhelm rocks the bold cuts, MARIOS rocks the one pieces, Margela rocks the jewelery -amongst other angular lovelies-, Marc Jacobs rocks the easy tees and knee high boots,Givenchy is most definately rocking the heels for me this season big big time, Alexander Wang for everything everything everything black…this list won’t end !
What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
That’s a tough one; I definately see myself breaking away from the routine of the 9 -5 (6,7,8,,9…) ; with more time to create and collaborate with my friends on different projects. I used to work as buyer for a friend’s vintage store, and I ‘ve discussed starting a small lingerie line with one of my best friends in London, and there’s definately alot of talk on designing a small laid back chic B&B with the boy in a small island in Greece; There are too many beautiful minds and just far too little time to make the most out of them.
