Colby “Sunshine” Nelson
Freelance Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Cartoon Phenomenon

HOW OLD ARE YOU?
30

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
On the prairie, where the white buffalo roam. (wink)
I hail from the Red River Valley. Fargo, North Dakota.

AS A KID WHO OR WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?
Super Mario, he always got the princess and I also wanted to be someone in a Shel Silverstein’s book. He still is one of my inspirations, his writing intrigues me and helps me envision fun places where monsters chill out and quarky little kids sit and play Hug-o-War.

YOUR WORST VICE?
Well, it’s a toss up between clothing and collecting things (star wars memorabilia to garbage pail kids)

YOUR FAVOURITE SONG?
This is a hard question because I take so much out of every genre of music. But there is one fellow ya’ll may know or have heard about, he goes by the name, Daniel Johnston, and the song that sticks with me by him is, True Love Will Find You In the End, it is just so griping and heartfelt, it moves me, more than alot and than from him to another end of the spectrum which lies a band that consists of a man named, J Mascis, Dinosaur Jr. in which contributed minutes upon minutes of great memories with my folk, the song that realy captures this end of the spectrum from them would be, well, the whole “Greenmind” album is bliss but, The Wagon always has me singing along over and over again.

YOUR FAVORITE FASHION BRANDS?
Paul Frank is always creating funky, fresh duds, Volcom, OBEY, FINK, Vans, Converse One Stars, Designedbyhuman.com, Threadless.com, Kangol, and any vintage slacks that look proper and gris with a nerdy pair of boots or kicks.

FIVE THINGS THAT YOU CURRENTLY LOVE MOST?
Sobriety, The fact that my brain is still fresh with ideas, Chai Tea and Of course, being able to do an interview for Set Your Style. Great times indeed.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Whimsiclechic. A modern, urban, vibe with a casual sense and feel to it. Laid back and ready to create a vision for someone’s eyesockets.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FASHION STORE?
Another doozy of a question. Any store that can go outside their boundaries and help local fashion designers show and sell their pieces and stores that have a unique sense of advertisting and an intriguing stock of one of a kind garmets.

IF I CAME TO FARGO (NORTH DAKOTA) WHAT SHOULD I ABSOLUTLY HAVE TO SEE?
Well, most definately would have to catch a silent movie at the Fargo Theatre, with its vinage, Wurlitzer pipe organ, in which is located in downtown Fargo.

WHO’S YOUR BEST FRIEND?
Again I can’t label out my friends, they all are great, from Tim, Neil, Krista, Peter, Ryan, Buffy, Melissa, Beth to Megan. But my biggest mentor and best friend is my mother, Diane. I couldn’t even start to explain how much she has added and given me to become the person I am right now.
There was always much imagination when it comes down to it. Whether it be from me showing her my drawings and her telling me her input to my other things I seek within this world. Without her I wouldn’t be the one i am today, she is that added light to my beacon I have to show to you all. So with that I’m thankful.
Thanks for asking. That is a touching subject for me.

YOUR LAST TRIP?
I wish I could say I was well traveled, unfortunately, I don’t fly much, but the last trip would have to have been to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Great city for a diverse interaction.

AND THE NEXT ONE?
I believe in not planning things out, so who knows what tomorrow will bring,

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE?
River bank or under a tree. Although, when I was younger, I used to make funky, little forts in my bedroom, consisting of old Mickey Mouse bedding and the staple, the old bunkbed, my brothers and I envisioned as a ship and sometimes a tank.

WHAT COULD YOU EASLY DO TO HELP THE PLANET?
Ride a bike and throw all my haggard, nasty wrappers in the garbage, of course.

TELL ME SOMETHING FUNNY…
I once swallowed a quarter. I went into my brother’s room where he hoarded quarters, I was little and wanted to go down the block and play, Mr. Do, So I tried to smuggle the quarter out by swallowing it, unfortunately, I had to go to the doctor, to find out it was lodged on of my ribs and yah, to make a short story even shorter, my mum framed the quarter to remind me never to do such a silly thing again…have it by my bed actually.

And for everyone who played with He-man toys, I recommend mix matching their body parts, you can have numerous amounts of hours laughing and making funny battles and stuff. Kringer made such a good Battlecat!!

Colby is the real deal. 100% unique and gifted. Unfortunately fargo is more exposed to cold weather than a respected arts scene. His work should be showcased at a much higher level. I’m glad to see his work on this site.

    Cheers,
